The fast light browser fantastic

At last a cross platform browser build purely with speed in mind. About time, too, given the number of times I've waited whilst IE, that hulking beast, locked my machine up while working out exactly how to render serveral nested tables..point your mice at the
Phoenix
Not that Mozilla isn't nifty, but some of us remember a nice fast browser called Mosaic :)

Czech Animation Lives(?)

Of course, nationalised industries aren't such a bad idea for some things. For the arts they can be a boon, even if they lead to the biting of the hand that's feeding them. Consider the cautionary tale of the Czech animator.

Interconnection

Thought for the day, from Emily Short..

In real life, space is continuous; in IF, it is discrete and comes in boxes. This often discourages authors from making use of grand vistas, which is rather a pity: I like games in which I can sometimes see from one room of the game to another. It may take some special programming to make this consistently behave right, but the rewards are considerable. Seeing far away objects before you are able to reach them (the sinister tower at the top of the hill) builds a sense of anticipation. It also deepens the sense that the setting you're moving around in is not just a movie set.

Blondes to become extinct.

Blondes 'to die out in 200 years' . Blondes will never die, says this bottle of peroxide. Hmm. A future in which the likes of Debbie Harry are regarded as freaks and only obscure perverts prefer blondes..

Ownership

The late Robert Heinelin thought that it was an important qualification for a writer to own their own home outright. The theory was that this meant that when times were hard, it was possible to eat beans and slum it before the next cheque. He may have been right.

Three dee math

One of the biggest pains in the arse of any 3d developers life is contiunally writing and rewriting 3d math routines. You should write your own set once, just so you know how they work. After that it's just pointless repetition. This is the kind of area where Open Source could excel. A nice set of math routines, nice and ready. There are probably good examples all over the place in Crystal Space and Cal3d, and plib, but someone (twelve someones) is trying to put together a definitve version: the Math3d library. Of course, they have some way to go before they match the excellent FreeMagic library

The Journal

A miscellany of topics that intersest me: deaf culture, game design, politics as soap opera, the cyborg condition and the experience of learning to hear again. Other topics presented are speculative fiction and imaginary cities. There are appearences of snippets of work in progress, public rants, pointless posts and Mish the Mouse.

The Writer

A lower middle class cyborg living an innocous life in a suburban village near Newcastle On Tyne, in the United Kingdom. Mostly autobiographical and creative notes posts and musings on the topic du jour.
